Conference of Athens “Prevention of Radicalization and violent extremism- Local Strategies & Initiatives”

The Conference of Athens “Prevention of Radicalization and violent extremism- Local Strategies & Initiatives” was  held on the 28-29 of March 2019 in Athens, Greece with the cooperation of our partner KEMEA in Greece.

The Conference and the initiative for the Declaration of Athens will be considered as part of PRACTICIES Project. The aim of the conference was to discuss the local dimensions of radicalization and extremism in Europe with a special focus in Greece. The event was  organised under the auspices of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece with the participation of the Greek Minister of Citizens' Protection, Ms Olga Gerovasili, and the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos to analyze the National and European perspectives of the phenomenon of radicalization. We were also honored by the presence of  the particpants the different participants (Cristophe Chantepy, Ambassador of The Republic of France in Greece, George Patoulis, Mayor of Amaroussion (Attica Region), President of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece ; Georgios Kaminis, Mayor of Athens ….)  , and our Practicice Partners (Nicolas Becuwe (Kantar Public) , Markus Pausch, Fachhochschule Salzburg ; Hassan Djerrah (City of Nice), Madrid Municipal Police, Garcia Calvillo (City of Hospitalet)..).

The different presentations and partcipants discussed the phenomenon of radicalisation  both in Europe and Greece. From the understanding of the terms and trends of radicalization and violent extremism to the need for local Prevention Policies and the challenges at the local level in Greece. Moreover , a focus on the prevention policies in Greece and the good practicies in European countries was also presented.

The Conference ended up with  The Declaration of Athens which aspires to establish a general  core principles of a strategy for local prevention policies against radicalization and violent extremism. Finally, the Declaration of Athens, is the first political document and strategic initiative for the role of local authorities in prevention of Radicalization and Extremism in Greece.
